A Fish rots from the Head

Introduction

A fish rots from the head, or so they say, meaning that it is the senior management of an organisation who set the tone, for good or evil.  Not that long ago I was visiting an engineering workshop with a number of its directors.  The workers were on a break.  On one of the marked walkways a power tool and its cables had been left.  4 Directors stepped carefully over it but it was the CEO who went to seek out the foreman to point out the breach of safety rules and to have it dealt with.

The disgusting transphobia I was subject to originated in the main from Dick Wood – volunteer public relations person running the WSR plc campaign against those of us seeking to change the WSR’s direction - and also Bob Meanley, WSR plc Engineering Director, who appears to have worked closely with Dick Wood on that campaign.

As well as a number of sneering transphobic remarks, Bob wrote a 7-page ‘satirical’ piece called ‘Forward to the Past’ full of Nazi ideology about the group of candidates, and me in particular.  I am lampooned as ‘Elle Duce’ and the Mussolini parady is carried to the extent of having me ‘hanging from a lamp post’ on the final page (82).  This ‘paraody’ was widely circulated on the Railway – anonymously of course – bullies are usually cowards – but the South Devon Railway disciplinary material shows clearly who the author was (72).

And all we did was to have a different idea how the Railway should be run and stand for election, having made that idea clear.

Nazi iconography is particularly hurtful to me given my personal and family background as I will explain in a later chapter in which I will include the full text of ‘Forward to the Past’

And what about the other Directors and WSSRT Trustees?  Well, the 1,000 pages of disclosure from my High Court action shows clearly their involvement but do look at the small selection from the Dick Wood disciplinary materials.

  • Jonathan Jones Pratt sees me called ‘She(it)’ and makes no comment (85).

  • Jonathan Jones Pratt, Steve Williams and Ian Coleby see myself and another trans person described as ‘hybrids’ and do nothing about it (89).

  • It is suggested in one email that I as ‘misfit’ should be pasted on dartboards (116) this is seen by Chris Austin, Steve Williams, Jonathan Jones Pratt and Mike Thompson and nothing is done.

  • Frank Courtney sees a suggestion about posting on Notice Boards (126) and does nothing.

  • Chris Austin recirculates ‘Forward to the Past’ (129) apparently happy with Nazi iconography characterising it as ‘deserving wider circulation’ and containing ‘wonderful character assassination’.

All the above are condemned by their actions which have accepted, validated and encouraged such action.  And these are only the examples from the SDR disciplinary materials.

This is a group of Directors and Trustees unfit to hold office in any public-facing organisations.  How could any LGBT person feel safe in or visiting this organisation?  Anyone from any minority group?  Anyone with an idea of their own? How are these people still acceptable in general heritage railway circles or events?  Dick Wood at least had the good grace to stand down from the Devon tourism organisation.

It remains the position that I have never yet had any acknowledgement of wrongdoing or apology from the WSR plc or WSSRT or any of their officers.
